Most of our excavation is the first half of another repair: exposing a foundation wall to waterproof it, digging for drainage, or opening ground for a wall or slab. We do it with compact equipment and put the lawn and landscaping back as close as we can.

Ottawa clay holds water against a wall and then freezes. Digging down and fixing the drainage is often the only way to stop the same leak coming back each spring.

Excavation — questions we get a lot

+What kinds of excavation do you do?
Mainly excavation tied to concrete and masonry work: digging to the footing for foundation repair and waterproofing, trenching for drainage, grading away from the house, and ground prep for retaining walls and slabs. We are not a large-scale site-servicing contractor.
+Do I need locates before you dig?
Yes. Ontario One Call locates are required before digging and are free to request. We arrange them, so buried gas, hydro and other services are marked before the machine starts.
+Can you dig next to my house without damaging the foundation?
Yes. Digging beside a foundation is done in stages, with the last stretch by hand or with careful machine work near the wall, and we watch for loose soil and sloping ground. On clay near a ravine we use low-vibration methods and check conditions first, as we do in Orleans.
+How is excavation priced?
It depends on depth, access, soil, rock or groundwater, and where the spoil goes, so we quote after a free on-site look and give you the number in writing.
+What happens to the lawn and the soil?
Topsoil and sod are set aside where possible, the trench is backfilled in compacted layers and the grade is left sloping away from the house. Heavy clay is often hauled away rather than reused against a foundation.
